New COVID-19 Variant "JN.1" Detected in Bangladesh: What You Need to Know

A new variant of the COVID-19 virus, named "JN.1," has been identified in Bangladesh, according to the country's Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR). The variant has been spreading globally and was detected in samples from five individuals within Bangladesh.

IEDCR Director Professor Tahmina Shirin confirmed the presence of the JN.1 variant, stating that it was identified through testing samples from coronavirus patients both inside and outside the capital, Dhaka. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported an increase in new coronavirus variants across several countries, including neighboring India.

About a month ago, the WHO categorized the JN.1 variant as a "Variant of Interest" (VOI) due to its rapid spread. However, the organization emphasized that, at present, there is evidence indicating a low risk to public health associated with this variant. Additionally, it is noted to be no more harmful than previous strains, with less severe symptoms despite its faster transmission.

Health Service Division Secretary Jahangir Alam informed reporters on January 14 that the government has secured 25 million vaccine doses. These doses are planned to be administered as a fourth dose to at-risk populations in 2024 and 2025.

DGHS Director General Professor Dr ABM Khurshid Alam assured the availability of vaccines, including Pfizer's, which remains effective against the new coronavirus. In light of the ongoing outbreak in various countries, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) had previously recommended mask-wearing as a precautionary measure. This advice was issued on January 13, along with a caution against undergoing COVID-19 testing before surgery or other medical procedures if there are signs or symptoms of the virus.

As the situation develops, health authorities continue to monitor the impact of the JN.1 variant and provide guidance to mitigate its spread.
